United Kids Connection!

Kids & Families connecting: To one another, new friends, and God's great love!

Jumping into the New Year!

We pray Christ encourages your hearts as the New Year moves forward.  Here are some highlights from the fall of 2012 that we hope to build upon in 2013:

As we reflect on this great year at United Church of Norwood, one significant highlight was calling Meg Nelson to come serve as the children’s minister.  So many have committed to giving and prayer towards making this hope for the church a reality – for this support we are truly grateful.

Sunday Kids Connection:  Following the children’s message in the church service, kids in preschool through grade five gather to sing, explore the Bible in creative ways, and pray together in interactive ways.   During the weeks of Advent, our kids have been raising money to provide a hive of honeybees to a family in Honduras.  Meg is joined by a volunteer each week for this fun meaningful time.  In the near future, we hope to offer nursery care supervised by volunteers during this time as well.  It has been great to see kids really dig into God’s word, and make connections with God’s love in fresh ways.

Kids Connection Free Craft Tables: Hosted at Norwood Day in September, as well as the church Christmas Fair at the start of December. A good way for Kids to have a way to connect at these events!

Family Fun Game Night:  The first one was hosted in November on Veterans’ Day Weekend.  Kids and grown-ups alike laughed a lot at a great night of being silly together.  That night we also made a poster board covered in cards which was delivered to the Norwood VFW Post in honor of Veterans’ Day. Upon Delivery, Meg got a big hug from the Post commander.

Host Site for Norwood/Walpole Young Life: We have also been blessed by the newly created partnership with Young Life – a para-church ministry focusing on building relationships with teens in local high schools.  During activities like club times and camp trips the teens learn about Christ’s love in a fun and safe place while experiencing the support and care of Christian adults.  Club meetings are Monday nights from 7:27-9pm at United Church of Norwood and consist of mixers, games, fun music, lots of snacks and an encouraging time of sharing by a leader.  While The Young Life ministry is active in the winter months, club gatherings will be taking a break until March.  Together with Young Life we are impacting teens and their families by sharing God’s love in practical ways.  If you know area teens let them know about Young Life!  If you want more information, speak with Meg or check out the Boston Southwest Young Life website at:  http://bostonsouthwest.younglife.org

Christmas Eve Kids Program:  This year, we got the kids involved in the Christmas Eve Worship Service!  As we told the pieces of the Christmas Story through the reading of passages from the Gospels, and sang carols, we had kids help provide the visual image of the nativity up bit by bit as the story was told.  First the Holy Family, then the shepherds, sheep, and angels, then the bright shining star, and the magi.  It was a fun way for them to participate, and an encouraging sight for all who were present!

Behind the Scenes: In addition to these great things, there has been a lot going on that’s not as visible.  Meg has been spending time researching curriculum, going to training events and ministry network gatherings, getting to know the church community, getting to know the Norwood area, as well as developing a path to creating an assessment of the ministry which will help her along with Pastor Kevin and the ministry volunteers develop a long term vision to impact the lives of children and teens in the community.

None of this would be possible if it weren’t for the faithful support of everyone at the United Church of Norwood.  We are extremely grateful for the support and encouragement from everyone in this church community, especially our team of volunteers!  If you are interested in supporting the children’s ministry help in any creative form is always welcome.  You can contact Meg through the church office or through her email: faithfulmeg@yahoo.com. A List of volunteer needs is available on this web site.  May God bless you and your loved ones this  in the New Year ahead!
